Overview
Rohwer, located in the Arkansas Delta region, was the second of two WRA concentration camps in Arkansas alongside Jerome. It operated from September 1942 to November 1945, holding a peak population of 8,475 people.
The camp primarily housed Japanese Americans from California. When Jerome closed in June 1944, many prisoners were transferred to Rohwer, making it one of the last camps to remain operational.
Daily Life in the Delta
Like Jerome, Rohwer's location in the Arkansas Delta brought oppressive humidity, mosquitoes, and sweltering summers. The flat, agricultural landscape contrasted sharply with the West Coast homes of most incarcerees.
Despite the challenging environment, Rohwer residents created a vibrant community with schools, athletics, cultural programs, and agricultural production. The camp became known for its active newspaper and theatrical productions. Today, Rohwer's cemetery and memorial serve as important historical sites.
